Our worldtimer pays homage to the beautiful enameled worldtimers from the early 20th century, but we designed it so that the timezones align with their positions on the globe. Look closer and you will find markings for the Arctic Circle, Tropic of Cancer, Equator, Tropic of Capricorn, and the Prime Meridian. Our hometown Seoul occupies the peak position of the city ring. Cities that observe daylight savings are not included.
TIME
Our main clock is based on the Angu-ilgu, a beautiful black-painted bronze hemispheric sundial with silver-gilt markings. It was created under the orders of King Sejong the Great, one of the finest sovereigns in Korean history and the creator of the Korean alphabet. It also takes inspiration from sector dials of mid-20th century Swiss watches. The dial features Korean numerals and the hour hand is inspired by the nebulous gnomon of the Angbu-ilgu, just like our logo.
ZODIAC TIME
Our zodiac clock tells the old East Asian hours, used in China, Japan, Korea, and other cultures prior to the adoption of Western time reckoning. The system is based on the Twelve Earthly Branches of Chinese astrology (commonly known as the Chinese Zodiac) with each ‘hour’ spanning two Western hours. The dial features Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and English. The illustrations of the twelve animals are based on 7th century Korean carvings.
